She shrugs. "You know me," Summers says, almost flippantly. "I'm a coward."

And it's true, because Summers' ability to protect herself from what she knows legitimizes it.

Story

Aria Victoria Summers was born Caleb Springer to a woman named Victoria Springer, age 22. David and Aaron Summers, Victoria's brother and brother in law, both in their thirties, adopted Aria from Victoria, who felt she was not prepared to take care of a baby.

When Cal was around six years old, he was diagnosed with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. As his body stopped producing dystrophin, Caleb spent a lot of time in the hospital. It was the eve of his tenth birthday, staring out the window of his room, when behind him appeared a mysterious creature, an amporhous blob with three distinct heads. The Night, The Moon, and The Dark. They speak together, and all Cal got from that conversation was he could be a girl. And so, shaking this creature's hand, not understanding what it really meant, Cal told her nurse, who called her parents, who asked what she wanted to be called now. It didn't matter too much-- she'd be called by her last name, Summers, by everyone except her dads, Victoria, and maybe a few friends. Ultimately, at age 10, she chose to go by Aria.

Victoria Springer was killed by some sort of darkness, a magical kind, when Summers was 15. Victoria Springer was the only casualty. Summers never met the person who failed to save her aunt, but that's when Summers discovered what the point of the pact was-- and that's when she took the middle name, Victoria, or "V" as the alias for her transformation. There was a sense of obligation to Victoria not to let what happened to her happen again.
